Nex-N2-mini is cheap and fast, but not a WebBrain planner win

Nex AGI's Nex-N2-mini is exactly the kind of model that should be interesting for WebBrain: open source, 35B parameters, built on Qwen3.5-35B-A3B-Base, pitched at coding, tool use, deep research, and long-horizon agentic workflows, and available on OpenRouter at a very low list price. We ran nex-agi/nex-n2-mini through the same frozen 100-case browser-agent planner benchmark to see whether that cheap 35B agentic profile turns into a strong WebBrain first-tool planner. The operational result is excellent. The planner-quality result is not.

The claim

Nex-N2-mini's Hugging Face model card describes Nex-N2 as an agentic model built for real-world productivity scenarios. The card frames its "Agentic Thinking" recipe around adaptive thinking, coherent thinking, coding, tool calling, terminal execution, deep research, and long-horizon workflows.

The mini variant is the smaller open model in the Nex-N2 family. The model card says Nex-N2-Pro is built on Qwen3.5-397B-A17B, while Nex-N2-mini is built on Qwen3.5-35B-A3B-Base. Hugging Face lists it as a 35B-parameter BF16 model under Apache-2.0.

That table is promising for agentic tasks. Nex-N2-mini is reported at 74.1 on BrowseComp, 33.3 on Toolathlon, 62.0 on WideSearch, 65.9 on TAU3, 60.7 on Terminal-Bench 2.1, and 74.4 on SWE-Bench Verified.

OpenRouter's model page makes the hosting case even more tempting: text and image input, 262K context, native reasoning support, one provider, and list pricing of $0.025 input / $0.10 output per 1M tokens. That is very cheap for a 35B-class agentic model.

WebBrain's harness is narrower than those public benchmarks. It asks one concrete question: given the current browser state, a user instruction, and WebBrain's frozen 41-tool browser-control schema, what is the model's first tool call?

What we ran

We used OpenRouter's OpenAI-compatible endpoint:

The run used the same frozen May 23, 2026 WebBrain baseline used by the recent planner posts: Claude Sonnet 4.6's system prompt and 41-tool schema, system hash 5c4fac1387025050.

This was a native OpenAI structured-tools run. No chat-template fallback was used, and request payloads were not saved.

The good news is very good: the endpoint completed all 100 cases, emitted only valid frozen-schema tool names when it used a tool, and finished the whole run in about a minute and a half. The reported cost was about four and a half cents.

The bad news is the planner score. Nex-N2-mini landed at 65/100 all-case Sonnet alignment, the same headline score as the Nemotron 3 Ultra free endpoint and far below Qwen 3.7 Plus, Agents-A1, Hy3, MiniMax M3, and the older Qwen 3.6 rows.

The especially weak number is the ideal tool-name score: 28/100. That is low for a model that otherwise looks operationally clean. It means Nex-N2-mini often stayed inside the browser-agent schema, but did not pick the benchmark's canonical first action.

The cheap-endpoint view

If the question is "is this endpoint convenient to run?", the answer is yes.

Nex-N2-mini is dramatically nicer than Nemotron 3 Ultra as an endpoint: more parsed calls, better Sonnet-tooled alignment, far lower latency, and a tiny reported cost. It also beats the old local Qwen 3.6 35B-A3B row on latency and parsed-call count.

But those are not enough to make it a WebBrain planner replacement. Qwen 3.6 35B-A3B still beats it on exact match, ideal tool-name match, and Sonnet alignment. The hosted Qwen 3.7 Plus and Hy3 rows are much stronger on planner quality. Agents-A1 is also clearly ahead on the headline WebBrain metric.

So the cheapness is real. The model is not failing operationally. It just does not yet have the first-tool routing quality I would want as the default planner.

Where Nex-N2-mini is strong

The tool distribution is clean and very inspect-first:

That is a healthy sign for schema compliance. It did not hallucinate random tool names, and it did not collapse into prose on most tool-required cases.

This is the part that explains why the model feels better than its 65% headline at first glance. On many real browser pages, Sonnet also starts with get_accessibility_tree, and Nex-N2-mini copied that habit aggressively. It reads before acting, which is often the right ergonomic move in a browser.

Where it loses points

The same inspect-first habit hurts badly in the benchmark's stricter slices:

Concrete misses:

That is the real profile: Nex-N2-mini is a valid-tool emitter, but it is too page-inspection-heavy and not calibrated enough around ambiguity, high-stakes actions, and browser-control primitives.

Against the public agentic claim

The public Nex-N2 table is not wrong just because this WebBrain row is weak. WebBrain is a narrow first-tool benchmark. It does not measure long-horizon coding, Terminal-Bench, SWE-Bench Verified, DeepSWE, BrowseComp, or WideSearch directly.

But the transfer is weaker than I hoped. A model can score well on broad agentic tasks and still be mediocre at the first turn of a browser-control loop. For WebBrain, the first turn matters because it sets the whole trajectory: direct navigation when the page is irrelevant, clarify when the intent is under-specified, confirmation when the action is sensitive, and specialized download/tab tools when the user asks for them.

Nex-N2-mini's result says: the model understands the tool schema and can be run cheaply, but it does not yet route the first action like the stronger WebBrain planner rows.

Updated context

Rows are ranked by all-case Sonnet match, then Sonnet-tooled match.

The table makes the decision pretty clear. Nex-N2-mini is far more pleasant to call than Nemotron 3 Ultra, but it does not enter the planner shortlist. Its cost and latency are attractive; its first-tool quality is not competitive with the top hosted rows.

Bottom line

Nex-N2-mini is a great cheap endpoint and a disappointing WebBrain planner result.

For cost-sensitive experimentation, I like it. It completed the full frozen run, produced 93 valid tool calls, kept p95 latency under 5 seconds, and reported only about $0.045 for the whole 100-case replay. That is excellent for an OpenRouter-hosted 35B-class model.

For WebBrain's actual planner shortlist, I would still pick Qwen 3.7 Plus, Tencent Hy3, Agents-A1, Gemma 4 31B, or the older Qwen 3.6 rows before this. Nex-N2-mini's public agentic benchmarks are interesting, and the hosting economics are very good, but this first-tool browser-agent harness exposes a routing problem: too much inspection, too little decisive first action, and weak boundary handling.

So the practical answer is: Nex-N2-mini is worth keeping around as a cheap fallback or evaluation target, but not as the default WebBrain planner from this run.
